『패턴 시티』는 도시의 이미지가 다양한 종류의 패턴이 쌓이고 어우러지며 만들어진다는 생각에서 출발한 시리즈 작업이다. 각각의 패턴은 도덕적 가치나 상업적 효용성, 혹은 미적 판단과는 무관하게 그 자체로 도시를 이해할 수 있는 하나의 단서가 된다. 도시에서 반복적으로 발생하는 사회적 현상, 두드러지는 시각적 이미지, 그리고 개인이 일상에서 마주하는 여러 경험이 모두 도시의 이미지를 구성하는 패턴이 될 수 있다. 『패턴 시티』는 이와 같은 패턴 하나하나를 유심히 들여다보고, 부지런히 수집하고, 빠짐없이 기록하고, 공들여 가공한 뒤에 다양한 매체의 형식을 빌려 엮어내는 작업이다.
『패턴 시티 07 / 후쿠오카의 하늘은 너무 낮아서 머리 위로 비행기가 흐른다』는 후쿠오카공항의 환경적 특성상 도심 상공에서 낮게 비행할 수 밖에 없는 항공기의 모습을 찍은 것이다. 항공사의 로고를 구별할 수 있을 정도로 낮게 나는 비행기의 모습은 그 자체로 후쿠오카라는 도시의 이미지를 구성하는 하나의 작은 패턴이 될 수 있겠다고 생각해 시작한 작업이다.
PATTERN CITY is a series that begins with the idea that a city’s image is formed through the accumulation and interplay of various patterns. Each pattern, regardless of moral value, commercial utility, or aesthetic judgment, serves as a clue through which the city can be understood. Recurrent social phenomena, striking visual images, and everyday experiences can all become patterns that shape the image of a city. PATTERN CITY is a personal project that carefully observes these patterns, diligently collects them, thoroughly documents them, and refines them before weaving them together through various media formats.
PATTERN CITY 07 / Airplanes Drift Overhead Because Fukuoka’s Sky Is So Low documents aircraft flying low over the city, a result of the environmental conditions surrounding Fukuoka Airport. The sight of airplanes flying so low that their airline logos are clearly recognizable struck me as one of the small yet distinctive patterns that shape the image of Fukuoka, and this project began with that observation.
