In the military, soldiers are often assigned to various events without knowing the purpose, and are expected to act with exaggerated responses. Even after discharge, reserve duty notices remind them of their status, uncertain of when they may be called back. Jioong Kang and Daebong Jeong created a fictional “Reserve Soldier Enrollment Ceremony,” and recorded it in 《The Ceremony》. Through this exaggerated event that “celebrates” their new status as reserve soldiers, they highlight the unnecessary rituals and pressures in military life. Under the authority of a large organization, personal identities are erased, and specific beliefs are expected of them. Yet, they simply go through the motions of saluting the flag, singing the national anthem, and bowing in silence for fallen soldiers, mouthing the words without real feeling.
