Canopy is a bilingual publication that records conversations with residents of Sakurajima, a volcanic peninsula in southern Kyushu, Japan. After experiencing a personal loss, the calm resilience of people living beneath constant volcanic activity became a source of solace. One year later, I returned to speak with eight residents, whose memories resonated with my own sense of absence and revealed how loss can also become a sustaining energy. The book visualizes the way memories intersect, echo and expand through others’ stories, forming part of a broader graphic design exploration into the layers of memory.
