Letters of Intent is a book that explores the “complicit friendship” between curator and artist through a documentary structure. It imagines forms of friendship—and their political possibilities—that exceed the specific purposes and the limits of time and space proposed by standard contracts. At the same time, it is a sincere record of the modes of relation practiced through the curator’s shifting identity, as well as a report that explores why one keeps working despite recurring emptiness. The friendship described in the book is not simply an act of feeling intimacy or trusting in kindness. Rather, it is an ethical sensibility toward the other: a willingness to risk being discarded within unstable relationships, and to declare a commitment to remain together even after everything has been exhausted. This sense of gravity takes shape through the archives of four relay exhibitions and an exhibition manual, choreographing a gesture of friendship toward readers and audiences to come.
