『리서치란 무엇인가』는 리서치를 개념과 실천으로 이해하기 위해 뉴욕 바드 대학원 센터에서 진행된 대담을 피터 N. 밀러가 엮어낸 기록이다. 리서치는 우리 문화의 모든 측면에 깊이 뿌리내리고 있다. 전 세계의 정부, 산업, 학술 기관들이 리서치에 막대한 투자를 아끼지 않는 것만으로도 그 중요성을 짐작할 수 있다. 그러나 리서치의 개념, 실행, 그리고 사회적 의미에 대한 탐구는 충분히 이루어지지 않았다.
맥아더 펠로인 감독 애니 도슨, 생물의학 연구자 엘로디 게딘, 조각가 톰 조이스, 물리학자 히데오 마부치, 시인 캠벨 맥그래스, 사진가이자 영화감독인 안–미 레, 신경과학자 실라 니런버그, 지구화학자 테리 플랭크, 역사학자 마리나 러스토우가 대담에 참여해, 각자의 전문 영역에서 리서치의 본질에 대한 깊이 있는 논의를 나눴다. 박유선과 박지윤이 책을 한국어로 번역했으며, 책의 영문판을 디자인한 유로피움 스튜디오(줄리아 안드레오네, 가잘 보이다니)와 줄리아 노비치가 국문판 역시 디자인했다. 표지는 총 여덟 가지 접지 변형으로 제작되었으며, 표지 사진은 유로피움에서 촬영했다.
WHAT IS RESEARCH? is an edited record of the talk held at the Bard Graduate Center in New York in the fall of 2019 and compiled by its director, Peter N. Miller. Research underlies nearly every aspect of our culture, with expansive investment poured into it and its significance acknowledged by governments, industries, and academic institutions around the world. Yet the idea, practice, and social life of research have not been a subject of study.
The book features conversations with theater director Annie Dorsen, biomedical researcher Elodie Ghedin, sculptor Tom Joyce, physicist Hideo Mabuchi, poet Campbell McGrath, photographer and filmmaker An-My Lê, neuroscientist Sheila Nirenberg, geochemist Terry Plank, and historian Marina Rustow, all of whom grapple with questions about the nature of research from their varied perspectives. The Korean translation was done by Yuseon Park and Jiyoon Park. The Korean edition was designed by Europium Studio (Julia Andréone and Ghazaal Vojdani) and Julia Novitch, who also designed the original English edition. The cover was produced in eight different fold variations, with cover photography by Europium.
