내용은 형식에 앞서 존재하는가? 나아가 형식과 내용에 위계가 존재하는가? 형식과 내용 사이에 선후 혹은 우열은 존재할 수 없다. 형식과 내용은 서로를 존재하게 하는 불가분의 관계이기 때문이다. 선후 혹은 우열에 대한 질문은 ‘닭이 먼저냐, 달걀이 먼저냐?’라고 묻는 것과 같다. 무엇이 먼저이든 형식은 내용을 낳고, 내용은 형식을 낳는다. 『뭐가 먼저냐』는 —책이라는 매체의 제작 과정을 역행하여 구현하는 실험을 통해— 형식과 내용의 관습적 선후 관계를 뒤바꿈으로써, 둘 사이에 먼저와 나중은 물론 우와 열은 결코 존재할 수 없음을 드러낸다.
Does content exist before form? Furthermore, is there a hierarchy between form and content? There can be no precedence or superiority between form and content because they are inseparably intertwined, each enabling the existence of the other. Asking about precedence or superiority is akin to asking, “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” Regardless of which comes first, form gives rise to content, and content gives rise to form. Which Came First reveals that there can be no before and after, no superior or inferior, between the two by reversing the conventional order of form and content through an experimental process that inverts the typical stages of book creation.
