『패턴 시티 02 / 금지된 것들 ― 도쿄』
『패턴 시티』는 도시의 이미지가 다양한 종류의 패턴이 쌓이고 어우러지며 만들어진다는 생각에서 출발한 시리즈 작업이다. 각각의 패턴은 도덕적 가치나 상업적 효용성, 혹은 미적 판단과는 무관하게 그 자체로 도시를 이해할 수 있는 하나의 단서가 된다. 도시에서 반복적으로 발생하는 사회적 현상, 두드러지는 시각적 이미지, 그리고 개인이 일상에서 마주하는 여러 경험이 모두 도시의 이미지를 구성하는 패턴이 될 수 있다.
『패턴 시티』는 이와 같은 패턴 하나하나를 유심히 들여다보고, 부지런히 수집하고, 빠짐없이 기록하고, 공들여 가공한 뒤에 다양한 매체의 형식을 빌려 엮어내는 지극히 사적인 작업이다. 이러한 시도를 통해 작업을 주도적으로 진행하는 디자이너뿐 아니라, 작품을 경험하는 독자(혹은 관람객)에게도 익숙한 도시의 풍경을 새로운 시각으로 바라보고 경험할 수 있는 계기가 되기를 기대한다.
『금지된 것들 ― 도쿄』는 2024년 10월 3일부터 10월 7일, 나흘간 도쿄에서 금지 표시가 있는 것들을 수집해 기록한 것이다. 표지판, 현수막, 손으로 그려 붙인 공지 등 시각적으로 의도가 명확한 것으로 보이는 도쿄 거리의 다양한 금지된 것들을 수집했다. 사진은 아이폰 13 pro와 아이폰 15 pro, 그리고 리코 GR1로 촬영했다.
PATTERN CITY is a series that begins with the idea that a city’s image is formed through the accumulation and interplay of various patterns. Each pattern, regardless of moral value, commercial utility, or aesthetic judgment, serves as a clue through which the city can be understood. Recurrent social phenomena, striking visual images, and everyday experiences can all become patterns that shape the image of a city.
PATTERN CITY is an personal project that carefully observes these patterns, diligently collects them, thoroughly documents them, and processes them before weaving them together through various media formats. Through this process, the project aims to offer not only the designer who leads the work, but also the readers (or viewers) who experience it, an opportunity to see and experience familiar urban landscapes from a new perspective.
PROHIBITED THINGS—Tokyo is a collection and record of prohibited signs and warnings gathered over four days in Tokyo, from October 3 to October 7, 2024. The project documents a variety of visually explicit prohibitions found throughout the streets of Tokyo, including signs, banners, and hand-drawn notices. The photographs were taken using an iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro, and a Ricoh GR1.
