“책은 그 자체로 하나의 작은 우주”라는 주제로 작업자의 주관적인 시선을 통해, 책의 물성에 관한 여러 가지 시도를 해 보는 프로젝트다. 〈토성의 고리〉는 여러 책의 ’배면‘을 확대 촬영해 엮은 것으로, 책 배면의 아름다움이 토성의 고리와 이미지적으로 유사하다는 시각에서 출발한 작업이다. 그리고 책을 매개로 한 독자와 작가 간의 관계성이 토성과 고리의 그것과 비슷하다고 생각했다. ’고리‘ 중철로 제본했고, 제본의 반대편 앞재단을 살려 책의 형태에서도 콘셉트가 잘 드러날 수 있도록 제작했다.
THE RINGS OF SATURN: This is story about BOOKS is a project that explores the materiality of books through the maker’s subjective perspective, based on the idea that “a book is a small universe in itself.” The work consists of enlarged photographs of the spines of various books, brought together into a single publication. It began with the observation that the visual beauty of book spines bears a striking resemblance to the rings of Saturn. The project further draws a parallel between the relationship of Saturn and its rings and that of readers and authors, connected through the medium of the book. Bound with ring-stitch binding as a reference to the concept of “rings,” the book also leaves the fore edge opposite the binding exposed, allowing its physical form to reinforce the central idea of the work.
