We Design Books is an interview collection capturing the work and daily lives of eight book designers. It covers everything from career management and workplace know-how, to thoughts on going independent, running social media, separating and balancing work and personal life, and the joys and sorrows of book design.
It holds the stories of those who do this work out of a love for books and a love for design—what they wrestle with, and how they have gotten through the hard times. Honest and unfiltered, it offers a look at “the work of book design that only they, right now, can speak to.”
For those reading this book, we hope you come to realize that you are not alone in your struggles—that there are dependable peers around you who share the same questions.
al-eum al-eum is a group of people who believe in loose friendships. Those connected to the publishing world have gathered, quietly and organically, to freely create the kinds of conversations they want to have—loosely bound, yet deeply connected. We Design Books is al-eum al-eum’s first project.
