디자인된 표면보다 그것을 가능하게 하는 구조와 형식에 집중하는 강이룬은 그래픽 디자인과 연구, 교육을 넘나들며 새로운 도구와 시스템을 만들어 왔습니다. 그의 작업은 결과물 자체보다 그것이 만들어지는 조건과 환경에 주목하며, 디자인의 역할을 새롭게 생각해보게 합니다. 2025년 11월, CC 세미나에서는 강이룬 디자이너의 작업과 그가 만들어 온 도구와 시스템에 관한 이야기를 들어보았습니다.
E Roon Kang focuses on the structures and tools that make design possible rather than on designed outcomes alone. Working across graphic design, research, and education, he develops systems for thinking about, making, and understanding design. His work draws attention to the conditions and environments that shape design, encouraging us to reconsider its role. In November 2025, at the CC Seminar, we spoke with E Roon Kang about his practice and the tools he has created through it.

강이룬(@rrrrroon)은 미국 캘리포니아예술대학과 뉴욕 파슨스디자인스쿨에서 그래픽디자인 및 커뮤니케이션디자인 학과장을 역임했고, TED 시니어 펠로우로 선정되고 MIT 센서블시티연구소 특별연구원으로 활동했습니다. 뉴욕, 샌프란시스코, 호놀룰루에서 디자인 스튜디오 매스프랙티스(Math Practice)와 리서치 콜렉티브 908A (@9_0_8_a)를 운영합니다. 게티연구재단과 스미소니언을 비롯한 주요 문화·예술 기관과 Google, MIT 건축대학, UCLA 건축대학 등 다양한 기술·교육 기관과 협업해 왔습니다.
Introduction
E Roon Kang (@rrrrroon) served as Chair of Graphic Design at California College of the Arts and Director of the BFA Communication Design program at Parsons School of Design. He was named a TED Senior Fellow and worked as a research fellow at the MIT Senseable City Lab. He runs the design studio Math Practice and the research collective 908A (@9_0_8_a) between New York, San Francisco, and Honolulu. His collaborators include major cultural institutions such as the Getty Foundation and the Smithsonian, as well as organizations including Google, the MIT School of Architecture and Planning, and the UCLA School of Architecture and Urban Design.
