위대한 작품이 어떻게 쓰였는지에 대한 이야기는 많지만, 그것이 어떤 방식으로 세상에 나왔는지는 잘 알려지지 않았다. 요한 볼프강 폰 괴테, 프리드리히 실러, 마르셀 프루스트, 베르코르, 에밀리 디킨슨과 버지니아 울프에 이르기까지… 오늘날 문학 정전의 한 축을 이루는 작가들 다수가 출판해 줄 누군가를 기다리는 대신 스스로 책을 만들었다. 이러한 역사는 한국에서도 발견할 수 있다. 백석은 시집 『사슴』 100부를 자비로 찍어 순식간에 절판시켰고, 유길준은 연금 상태에서 집필한 『서유견문』을 자비 450원을 들여 일본에서 출간했다. 한국 최초의 문예동인지 『창조』와 여성 잡지 『신여자』 역시 자발적으로 기획되고 제작된 출판물이었다.
『Do or DIY』는 문학사의 숨겨진 출판 역사를 발굴하며, ‘승인’을 기다리는 대신 직접 실행하는 ‘DIY 출판’을 독려한다. 2012년 런던에서 24페이지의 영문판 소책자로 처음 발표된 이래, 이 책은 각 나라의 저자들이 자국의 DIY 출판 사례를 새롭게 발굴해 덧붙이며, 번역될 때마다 내용이 확장되는 독특한 구조를 가진다. 독일, 이탈리아, 프랑스 등 유럽과 칠레, 브라질 등 남아메리카 대륙을 거쳐, 이번 한국어판을 통해 『Do or DIY』는 아시아로 그 범위를 확장한다.
Many stories have been told about how great works of literature were written, yet far less is known about how they found their way into the world. From Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Marcel Proust, Vercors, and Emily Dickinson to Virginia Woolf, many authors who now form part of the literary canon did not wait for someone to publish their work—they made their own books. Similar histories can also be found in Korea. Baek Seok self-published 100 copies of his poetry collection Dear, which quickly sold out, while Yu Gil-jun published Seoyu Gyeonmun (Observations on Travels in the West) in Japan at his own expense during a period of political confinement. Korea’s first literary magazine Changjo and the women’s magazine Sinyeoja were also publications created through independent initiative.
Do or DIY uncovers these overlooked histories of publishing and encourages DIY publishing—the act of making and sharing work without waiting for approval. First published in London in 2012 as a 24-page English booklet, the book has continued to evolve through each translation, with contributors from different countries researching and adding their own histories of DIY publishing. Following editions in Europe, including Germany, Italy, and France, and in South America, including Chile and Brazil, Do or DIY now expands its journey to Asia with this Korean edition.
