서울과 도쿄를 기반으로 활동하는 포토그래퍼 전솔지의 사진집이다. 이 사진집은 배우 쿠츠나 시오리의 사적인 일상과 여정을 전솔지의 섬세한 시선으로 포착해낸다. umipodo라는 독특한 제목은 일본어로 ‘바다’를 의미하는 ‘우미’(海, うみ)와 한글 ‘포도’를 합성한 것으로, 쿠츠나 시오리의 성 ‘쿠츠나’가 유래한 오키나와 지역의 특산물인 ‘바다포도’를 상징하기도 한다.
두 사람이 2011년 대학의 사진학과에서 처음 만난 이후부터 2023년까지, ‘전솔지’는 서로 다른 계절과 장소에서 친구 ‘시오리’를 찍어왔다. 시간의 흐름 속에서 삶의 다양한 장면들이 포개져 담긴 사진들을 한 편의 긴 성장 영화같은 한권의 책으로 엮어냈다.
umipodo うみポド is the photobook by Seoul and Tokyo-based photographer Solji Jeon. It delicately captures the private moments and journeys of actress Shioli Kutsuna through Solji’s nuanced perspective. The unique title, umipodo, combines the Japanese word for “sea” (海, うみ, umi) and the Korean word for “grape” (포도, podo). It also symbolizes “sea grapes,” a specialty of Okinawa, which is connected to Shioli Kutsuna‘s surname, “Kutsuna.”
Since first meeting in 2011 at a university’s photography department, Solji has been photographing her friend Shioli through different seasons and places until 2023. The photos, layered with various moments of life over time, are compiled into a book that unfolds like a long coming-of-age film.
