‘인쇄의 죽음’은 인쇄 산업의 쇠락을 일컫는 말이다. 특히 종이책은 디지털의 등장 이후 소멸이 불가피할 것이라 여겨져 왔다. 하지만 인쇄는 아직 그 명맥을 유지하고 있으며, 여전히 수많은 책이 태어나고 있다. 그런데 ‘인쇄‘의 죽음이라는 거대 담론과는 별개로, 과연 한 권의 책은 어떻게 죽음을 맞이하는가? 디자이너로서 우리는 책의 탄생에 주의를 기울여 왔기에, 그것의 죽음에 대해서는 그다지 아는 바가 없다. 내가 만든 책은 어떻게 사라질까? 책이 맞이하는 죽음의 과정을 추적해 봄으로써 우리의 생산이 가지는 의미를 다시 생각해 본다.
‘The Death of Print’ refers to the decline of the printing industry. The physical book, in particular, has long been considered destined for disappearance following the rise of the digital age. And yet print endures, and books continue to be made. But set apart from this sweeping narrative of print’s death—how does a single book come to its end? As designers, we have paid careful attention to the birth of books, and so we know very little about their dying. What happens to the books I have made? By tracing the process through which a book meets its end, we reconsider the meaning of what we produce.
