『고향땅』은 작가가 세상을 떠난 할아버지 김성웅에게 한 약속에서 시작된 개인적인 작업이다. 김성웅은 대한민국 국군에서 카메라 기술자로 일했다. 작가 에스더 김은 할아버지가 남긴 노트와 이야기를 바탕으로, 디트로이트에서 활동하는 예술가이자 디자이너 마르티나 알렉산더와 함께 이 책을 만들었다. 책은 사진집이자 번역서, 아카이브이자 가족의 유산, 북에서 남으로 향한 할아버지의 여정을 담은 회고록이다.
HOMELANDS is a limited-edition artist’s book and deeply personal work from a promise to the author’s late grandfather, Sohng Ung Kim, a professionally-trained camera technician for the Korean army. Using the spiral notebook and story he left behind, writer Esther Kim created this hybrid—photo book, translation, archive, family heirloom, and memoir of his journey from north to south—in collaboration with the Detroit-based artist and designer Martyna Alexander.
